Patients/Patience is a self-initiated brief completed during my 3rd year of BA (Hons) Photography at the University of West of the Scotland. The premise of the project was to visually depict the amount of waiting concomitant throughout a cancer patient’s diagnoses, in order to raise awareness about this specific and anxious aspect of the disease. Drawing from personal experience with my father’s cancer, I found that we would be waiting for scans, scan results, treatment to start, treatment to end and that this cycle would repeat itself every three months, and still does. By emulating a waiting room and placing subjects representing patients across the table from the camera, I felt that this would create a dramatic presence felt by the viewer. By then incorporating the use of motion into these photographs, I could show the restless and repetitive movement of the patients, which in turn heightens the atmosphere of the project and invites question from the viewer.
